Why EECP treatment?

EECP (enhanced external counterpulsation) is a mechanical kind of chest pain treatment.


What Is EECP?

EECP is a mechanical procedure that includes wrapping lengthy inflated cuffs over each of the patient’s ankles (similar to blood pressure cuffs). When the patient is laying on a bed, the leg cuffs are inflated and deflated synchronously for each pulse.

A machine uses the patient’s electrocardiogram (ECG) to manage inflation and deflation, causing inflation early in diastole (when the heart relaxes and fills with blood) and deflation only when systole (heart contraction) begins.

The blood in the legs is “milked” upwards, into the centre, by inflating the cuffs successively from the lower to the upper region of the legs.


Why EECP treatment


EECP has at least two possible heart-beneficial effects

The milking activity of the leg cuffs promotes blood supply to the coronary arteries during diastole. (Unlike other arteries, coronary arteries receive blood supply during rather than after heartbeats.)

Second, by deflating just as the heart begins to beat, EECP creates a quick vacuum in the lungs, reducing the amount of work the heart muscle has to do to pump blood. It’s also considered that EECP can help with endothelial dysfunction decrease.


EECP can improve peripheral arterial control while lowering myocardial oxygen demand.

There is an alternate treatment for patients who have heart disease and have been advised to undergo bypass surgery or angioplasty. The EECP (Enhanced external counter pulsation) treatment for coronary artery disease is a non-surgical procedure.

EECP is a wonderful choice for those patients who are unwilling or unable to undergo surgery. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved EECP (Enhanced external counter pulsation) for the treatment of angina (chest discomfort) and hearing loss.

Treatment with EECP is completely safe, painless, and does not necessitate hospitalisation. Three sets of cuffs are tied at the calf, thigh, and hip regions in EECP treatment; these cuffs are inflated during Diastole (heart’s resting phase) and deflated right before Systole (Heart contraction). Electronically synchronised inflation and deflation with the heartbeat. This treatment is given for 35 days at an hour every day.

How Effective Is EECP?

EECP has been shown to be effective in the treatment of recurrent stable angina in several studies.

EECP significantly raised both angina symptoms (a subjective measure) and workout resistance (a more objective measure) in persons with CAD in a small randomised research. Furthermore, EECP significantly improved quality-of-life outcomes as compared to placebo treatment.

According to other studies, symptom alleviation following a session of EECP can last up to five years (though 1 in 5 patients may require another course of EECP to maintain their improvement).


How Does EECP Work?
